The garage is a part of our home that is incredibly easy to store things in. Unfortunately, that also makes it really easy for clutter to build up and messes to form. Whether you’ve lived in your house for decades, haven’t finished unpacking from the recent move, or you’ve really just gotten bad about clearing clutter when it builds up, today’s blog is for you.

The team at Weebbles Junk Removal and Hauling has spent years providing the Houston area with the junk hauling services that they need. In today’s blog, we are going to touch on a few tips that can help you clean up your garage and keep it organized. Let’s get started.

Set Aside Time

Making excuses is usually the reason that we never get around to cleaning our garage. Aside from the fact that life definitely gets busy, cleaning and organizing your garage definitely isn’t an exciting way to spend your downtime. That being said, the first step to cleaning your garage is to set aside the time that you need to do it. Depending on the state of your garage, you may need a weekend or two dedicated purely to this task. Once you’ve set this time aside, stick to it! You need to be fully committed to cleaning your garage in order to make it a reality.

Empty It

This is the step that scares most people — emptying the garage. If you’ve ever done a deep cleaning and reorganization of a space, you know that you need to fully empty it in order to gain a clean slate. The same can be said about your garage. While it may be time consuming and overwhelming, the first thing that you want to do is empty the space.

As you go about emptying the space, you want to make sure that you look at every item — yes, every single item. Once you’ve grabbed something from the garage, determine if that is an item that you would like to keep, sell at a garage sale, donate, or throw away. Keep these piles separated and organized throughout the process of removing items. Once you’ve completely emptied your garage, you have a clear idea of where all those piles need to go.

If you know that you’re going to have plenty of stuff to throw away or donate, utilizing a junk hauling service like those by Weebble Junk Removal & Hauling is entirely worth your time! Not only will this make the process of cleaning your space less difficult, but it will save you the step of hauling all of those items away.

Deep Clean

A garage is often forgotten about when it comes to cleaning, and for a couple of different reasons. For starters, this is a space that, while it is still attached to the house (in most cases), doesn’t entirely feel like a part of the house. Secondly, this is a space where outdoor equipment, tools, and cars are stored — not exactly items that you associate with cleanliness. And lastly, this is, as we mentioned earlier, a great space to use for extra storage. Whether you’re storing boxes from a move, clothes that you don’t wear in-between seasons, or food for your pets, it can quickly turn into a mess that you don’t necessarily feel like cleaning.

Now that you have an idea of why garages aren’t always kept clean, it’s time for the next step: deep cleaning your garage. As we just finished talking about, this space is often forgotten about in the process of cleaning a home. So, now that it’s emptied out, it’s time to clean. One of the very best ways to go about doing this is by starting with a thorough sweep. Get as much dirt as you can out and then pour dish soap or laundry detergent on the floor. Drag your hose to the garage and spray it down. With a wide brim broom, scrub the floor of your garage. Once you’ve rinsed it down once more, use your brush to push the water out. Give it some time to dry, and walla! You have a nice clean garage floor.

Cleaning the garage floor is the final step for some garages, but not all. In some instances, dusting and cleaning of walls may be necessary too! While you may be tired of cleaning at this point, take the additional time to really get this space nice and clean.

Organize the Garage

Now that the garage is clean, it’s time to put everything back. At this point, you’ve likely gotten a bit fatigued with the process or may even just be bored. Even so, you must stick with the process. Depending on what organizational factors you’ve struggled with in the past, you may want to head out and invest in some storage cases or organizational structures that help maintain all of the hard work that you’ve just completed. You might also need a dumpster if there is a lot of junk to be thrown out of the garage.

This point of the process is also a great time for reorganizing the garage the way that you’d like it to be. If, for example, you haven’t had enough space to work on projects, take advantage of this time and organize it in a way that works best for you. Again, as bored with the process as you may be, take your time to ensure that the end result of this deep cleaning and organizational process leave you with an end result you are proud of and enjoy using.
